What are we doing that’s green?


Ashford Castle is delighted to announce that it is the first five star hotel in Ireland to be awarded the GREENMark Plastic Smart Standard for it’s efforts in responsible tourism and its commitment to remove all single use plastics (SUPs) from the Ashford Castle property by 2022.

The GREENMark Plastic Smart Standard is awarded to venues eliminating single use plastics from customer facing areas. GreenTravel developed the awards programme to enable businesses to promote their environmental good practices.

Ashford Castle is owned by the Red Carnation Hotel group who have collaborated with the TreadRight foundation and is participating in the #MakeTravelMatter initiative to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on the people and communities visited.

What are we doing that’s green?
Green Team in place
Hotel installed LED lights in all public areas, including Basement Car Park.
Installed sensor lights in BOH areas (Canteen, back corridor, changing rooms, offices)
.Kitchen extractor fans, lights, and unused equipment switched off when not in use.
Management checks in M&E (Shutting off lights and A/C in rooms and ballroom when not in use)
.Installed Aerators in all Guest bathrooms.
Designated waste bins (Food, compost, recyclable, cardboard, general).
Purchased general waste compactor.
Pool cover repaired.
Continuing to work on raising awareness, educating staff, training via daily training planners, changing the Culture.

What are we doing that’s green?
Memberships – We are a member of Green Hospitality and Repak.
Bio-degradables – We have started changing over to bio-degradable products such as straws, take away cups and containers and bin-liners.
Waste Segregation Programme – We have implemented this throughout the hotel with separate waste areas for recycling, general, food, glass and electrical items.
Energy-saving Lighting – All bedroom lighting has been changed to energy saving lighting since 2014 and we are currently in the middle of rolling out upgrades in other departments such as banqueting, back of house and staff offices.
Replacement of Elevators – We are in the process of replacing our elevators in the hotel with more energy efficient ones.
Mechanical & Electrical – Replacement of large equipment in our plant room. Our pumps have become more efficient after ongoing project over the past 2 years due to investment. Project nearly completed.
Building Management System – BMS being addressed currently with replacement due over the next 12 months.
