25% of the City’s population are students with over 11,000 individuals employed within the education sector of Galway. With established links to universities and R&D institutions, there are high levels of educational attainment and skills throughout Galway.
Galway’s growing and globally recognised Creative and MedTech sector has contributed to the destination’s visibility. The MedTech sector in Ireland is recognised as one of five global emerging hubs. Nine of the world’s top ten MedTech companies are based in Galway.
The county’s richness of culture coupled with diversified sectors are key elements of place-based innovation. From these foundations, there are growing business start-ups, which are evident in Galway’s ICT and food sectors.

Welcome to ATU iHubs where great ideas take off
ATU iHubs offer inclubation space and supports to high potential entrepreneurs and innovative business start-ups & scale ups with specific focus on Medtech and Digital Technology companies. Resources from the knowledge hub nurtures growth by offering financial support and mentoring that works intuitive with research from ATU. Since 2005 1,300+ directly supported jobs have been created to date.
University of Galway - Business Innovation Centre
For start-ups, University of Galway provides business development and studio facilities, including laboratories. Supports include guidance, mentoring and access to academic expertise. Up to 40 companies are based on campus with over 170 employees across 3 innovation centres.
PorterShed
The PorterShed is a dynamic and thriving innovation hub that fuels the growth of startups and fosters a collaborative entrepreneurial ecosystem. PorterShed is a showcase for Galway’s tech start-up scene, housing in excess of 50 innovative companies and over 200 people use the space daily from Full Time members, hot desks to people attending events and workshops.'
